River Ribble

Geography

The Ribble begins at the confluence of the Gayle Beck and Cam Beck near the famous viaduct at Ribblehead, in the shadow of the Yorkshire three peaks.

It is through the flow of Settle, Clitheroe, Ribchester and Preston, before emptying in the Irish Sea from Lytham St. Annes and Southport, a length of 75 miles (121 km).

Major tributaries of the Ribble are Hodder and Calder which join the river near Great Mitton, the River Darwen which joins at Walton-le-Dale and the River Douglas which joins near Hesketh Bank.

The Ribble Way is a long path that follows the river for much of its course. The Ribble marked the northernmost point of the ancient kingdom of Mercia. At the time of Domesday Book, the river forms the northern boundary of an area of land (known as the Inter IRPCAS et Mersam) that was included in the Cheshire Domesday information, despite that probably was not formally part of the county of Cheshire.

The river is connected to both the Canal Leeds and Liverpool Canal and the Lancaster (Via the Ribble Link). The river downstream of active dredging Preston when Preston was an active port, which is no longer made and the river silt is spreading more broadly about the (sand) beaches around Fairhaven and St. Annes.

Its part of the Ribble and Alt Estuary Estuaries Special Area Wildlife protection.

The normal tidal limit (NTL) of the river is at Fishwick Bottoms, between Preston and Walton-le-Dale.

Public Works

Ribble river basin is covered by the Basin Campaign the Mersey, a partnership that was established in 1985 to improve water quality and stimulate the regeneration side.

Preston City Council has published the controversial plan to build a dam across the River Ribble, in his "Riverworks proposals. The aim of these proposals is the construction of a water sports park on a stretch of the Ribble, with more than 4000 high quality housing units and businesses in the floodplain of the River. Some residents Local oppose these plans, arguing that endanger wildlife, increase flood risk to local homes and damaged areas of parkland. These residents have launched the 'Save The Ribble Campaign. Parts of the river are a County Biological Heritage Site.

The Ribble seem to have been known in Roman times as Belisama able to give his name to Samlesbury. Ptolemy Belisama CST. " seems to represent the Ribble estuary.

History

The banks of the Ribble has been postulated as a possible location for the tenth battle King Arthur, on the banks of a river "Tribruit", as referenced in his History Brittonum by Nennius.

Certainly there were links between Cheshire and south Lancashire before 1000, when possessed Wulfric Spot lands in both territories. Wulfric estates remained grouped together after his death, when his brother left Aelfhelm, and in fact still seems to have been some connection in 1086, when southern Lancashire was considered together with Cheshire by the Domesday commissioners. However, the two areas appear to have been distinguished from each other in some way and it is true that the region-debatable and referred reefs in the southern section of Domesday were the Cheshire Lancashire.

^ Crosby, A. (1996). writes on page 31:

Survey Domesday (1086) included south Lancashire with Cheshire for convenience, but the Mersey, the name of known 'boundary river' means being divided kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia and there is no doubt that this was the real limit.
