Summer is around the corner and is the season for Canadian celebrations. Whether it be May 24, Canada day, a birthday or engagement party, this is the season to get outdoors and throw a party for your family and friends.
Here are some ideas to make your outdoor space ready for the perfect garden party:
1. Rent a tent or large canopy. Although summer is often the season of beautiful sunshine, renting a tent for that special day will protect your buffet table and bar set-up from potential raindrops. Even if space does not permit, you can rent a 10×10 foot tent that will make all the difference at your special event. There are a few tent rental agencies to choose from – make sure they offer event consulting advice and consider all aspects of party planning – ie. power source, seating and tables, cutlery, cooking equipment, lighting, etc.
2. Pick a colour palette. Choose a neutral colour and pair it with a fresh colour to compliment the summer season. For example, white and red, or green and a pop of purple. One you have chosen a couple colours, then consult your tent rental or event planning agency as to what tableware and decor you need and visit your florist with those few colours in mind. Throw pillows are also a great way to add a touch of colour.
3. Tableware – lots of choices. Choosing the appropriate tableware for your event can be a daunting task. Most people do not have enough matching plates, glasses and cutlery for more than a dozen guests. If you do not want to purchase these items for a one-time event, don’t forget that you can rent china and glassware from many tent and event rental agencies. Renting these items is the easiest and cheapest way to host a large party. Don’t forget your colour scheme!
4. Music to set the ambiance. Music is one of the most important aspects of a well put-together party. You can install outdoor speakers and set them up to your iPod if you are technologically-savvy. Alternatively, if you are having a larger or more upscale event, you can even have a party rental agency set up a dance floor and DJ booth to really get the party going.
5. Make the outdoors an indoor living space. You want to replicate the indoors as much as possible to enhance comfort and style. This includes the music, comfortable seating, lighting, tables, shield from the sun or rain in the form of a tent or canopy, dishware that is not paper, and pretty decor. All these items are easily achievable by renting the right equipment and asking a specialist for advice and paying attention to detail. One fact about the outdoors is that it is home to many annoying insects. To prevent wasps from invading your party, hang a fake wasp nest nearby. To fend off mosquitoes, light citronella candles (not under your tent).
6. Food ideas. Food is often the highlight of a party. The obvious choice for a summer event is barbecue. Nothing beats barbecued jerk chicken with a fresh mango and cilantro salsa or rosemary lamb chops with a fresh salad. Make sure to offer vegetarian options. This can easily be achieved by grilling asparagus, zucchini and eggplant. If you are having a garden party, choose healthy garden items for your menu. Your guests will appreciate fresh fruit and grilled meats over store-bought fried foods.
7. Catering equipment. Most people do not have a large enough barbecue to cook all the food at once. Consider renting a large portable BBQ at least 60″ in length. You will need a large serving table to place the food and dish covers or insect covers to keep the food warm and bug-free.
8. Set up a bar and make a summertime cocktail menu. You will need a make-shift bar or large cocktail table for your bartender or to display beverage options for guests. Ice buckets, a large drinks cooler and a blue bin for empties are all necessary. If you do not have enough wine glasses, champagne flutes, or cocktail glasses, then rent them. Be cognizant that people will try different beverages and require more than one glass each. My favourite summertime cocktails are mimosas, and vodka or rum with orange, pineapple or cranberry juice with a touch of grenadine.
9. Install water features. Nothing beats the relaxing ambiance provided by the sound of a running water fixture. Make sure you have an outlet nearby or rent an extension cord.
10. Hire a tent rental or party planning agency. Planning a large outdoor event can be stressful, but this can be avoided by renting equipment, hiring professionals and seeking professional advice. Contact your local tent rental agency and make sure they provide event consulting for both functionality and design. If you enjoy yourself as the host and mingle with your guests, your party will be the one to remember.
