For lawyers: What is the courtroom dress code for your customers?
I had to appear before a magistrate of the town in the state New York today for a traffic violation. I've grown up a bit around the waist so my dress did not fit well, and I opted for slacks and a jacket sports did, along with a tie. I thought that was what I had to do. I was the only defendant male in a jacket. Some men wore shorts, sandals, flip flops, sunglasses … a young woman wearing a baseball cap. Very few people had on shirts with collars. I was too warm. This was a court of first instance and that the offenses were misdemeanors and not least, although there was a lack of registration as a sex offender, possession, arraignment drunk driving – not just breaches like mine. Since most of the defendants with more serious crimes have representation, I wondered, what level of court costs or attorney to lawyers to their clients to wear a bit? Do not worry defendese lawyers when their clients appear looking ready to go to the beach?
FYI, I am not actually a lawyer. I advised a few friends through judicial procedures as a student in the last 4 years – from speeding and open tickets container type things. lots if you are in any kind of trial the defendant is almost always in a suit. for more minor offenses, can be reduced to a collared shirt and pants. judge in our area (I'm from New York too. fredoina, Chautauqua County) insisted that people say "yes" or "no." You will be surprised how many people still say "yes", "Yes", "nah" or "No". so it is still advisable to bring a jacket. sample taken seriously in the courts. only when you are recurrent / constantly on the roll is what you really want to give that up.
